Biographical Notes

Karen Gruszka was born in Michigan into a family of talented artists and musicians.  At an early age she was encouraged to study art and music and, throughout her life, has explored and mastered many art forms and musical instruments.  In the 1980's Karen worked as an assistant trainer of thoroughbred race-horses, gathering first hand knowledge for her detailed portraits of horses and racing scenes.

After years of commissioned works, Karen moved to Arizona to explore painting in the desert.  Until now, her formal training had primarily focused on the techniques and philosophy of the old masters.

In 1992, Karen moved to Santa Barbara where she immediately felt a spiritual connection to the land and the gentle California light.  In 1996 Karen married artist Arturo Tello and moved to Carpinteria where she now resides.  Working from life, she feels that painting is a celebration of the natural world and the immense beauty that surrounds us.  She has a strong belief in the importance of preserving open spaces for future generations.  Karen is a member of the OAK Group ~ a group of painters working to raise funds and awareness to preserve the natural environment. She is also a member of the California Art Club, and the Santa Barbara Art Association.

There are many painters, past and present, who give tremendous inspiration to this artist. To name a few are: Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Rosa Bonheur, Joaquin Sorolla, Bartolome Esteban Murillo, Diego Velasquez,  John Singer Sargent, Maynard Dixon, Jan Saether, Meredith Abbott and Glenna Hartmann.
